614:.— Robert Curtis, b. June 20, 1836, m. March 1, 1860,
Ellen E., dau. of W. O. Lewis. He is a partner in the
firm of John Wanamaker in Phila. Rev. Dr. Erdman
of Morristown, N. J., an old friend, has written this
sketch of Mr. Ogden which we think it but just to insert.
Mr. Ogden is a fine illustration of a man of remarkable
executive ability and widespread business relations, win-
ning success by the utmost diligence and closest attention
to ah the details of his calling, at the same time giving
unstintedly of his best thought and energy to various re-
ligious and philanthropic interests. While still in his
young manhood, Mr. Ogden became a devoted worker in
the Sunday School cause, first in Brooklyn, N. Y., and
now for many years, as the head of the great Sabbath
School connected with the "Holland Memorial Presby-
terian Church, " in Philadelphia. His indomitable energy.
Christian enthusiasm and wise business judgment have
made that school one of the model Sunday Schools of our
land. Its membership is upwards of 1,500. As an elder

32 THE OGDENS OF SOUTH JERSEY — SIXTH GENERATION.

in the church Mr. Ogden has not only made himself a
power in the moral and religious life of his church and
city, but also in the interests of the church at large. For
a number of years, he has served as a member of the
Board of Ministerial Relief of the Presbyterian Church,
and none more efficiently than he. Many years ago Mr.
Ogden became deeply interested in the work of Hampton
Institute in Hampton, Ya. With his customary unsel-
fishness and earnestness, he worked for the success of the
cause, and to no one did the late Gen. Armstrong, the
noble founder of that institution, look with greater confi-
dence for counsel and aid, than to his devoted personal
friend and co-worker, the Philadelphian christian mer-
chant. And so in every sphere, where duty called him,
Mr. Ogden has shown the same unselfish devotion and
wise Christian judgment, a "man of affairs " in the high-
est and best sense.
